Here are some things I didn't know until I asked somebody "How do you DO that?"

It's a good idea to set up your Lycos mail before you get started on your website. This way you will have a special email address to provide visitors to your site. It's also a good place to receive any other correspondence related to the site.

Start a clipart collection for your website. Keep on your hard drive with a backup for portability. I keep separate folders for various subjects, such as cooking, critters, flowers, etc. Most website hosts let you choose from their graphic file or upload from your computer. Your uploaded pictures will then be stored with the other files for your website.

Most clipart on the internet is free for personal use. Place your cursor over the picture of your choice, right click your mouse, choose "Save picture as...". When your computer's menu pops up, choose the folder of your choice and "Save."

Adding real photos to your site? The desired size for a photo uploaded to a website is 72 dpi or less. Bigger will not look any better and will slow down the time it takes for your page to open. You can change the dpi, as well as the physical size of a picture with many photo handling programs. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements.

If you're looking at a thumbnail, get the actual picture before you save to your hard drive. What you see is what you get. Ditto for animations. If he's not dancing when you save him, he won't dance on your website. Try it now! I got this picture from Artie's New Clipart (listed on the links page.)

MSN Backgrounds: To get a background image on your MSN page, keep a file in your "Documents" especially for background image storage. When you are ready to use an image, open the one of your choice, copy it's URL to a notepad on your computer. With your page in "Edit" mode, choose the "table" icon (looks like a calendar). Experiment with numbers in the cell padding and border width areas. When you get to the background, paste the URL for your background (which MUST be in your "Documents" folder in the space for background image URL. MSN does not like the "copy & paste" right-click method. Use Control C for the copy from your notepad and Control V to paste it in. I've tried other methods - they don't work!

A couple of things....

First, a tip about ADDING PICTURES in Tripod - When you add a picture, it tends to be put on the page as a really large item, no matter what the actual size is. The first time it happened to me I was startled! Edit the picture. You can change the size. You can wrap text around it. You can make it a hyperlink. Play with the possibilities and you can come up with some really good effects!

Second, if you're interested in LEARNING HTML.....

I don't believe in reinventing the wheel! Joe Barta has a site that really starts with step one! This is not for the person who already is comfortable with "cutting and pasting" from places like HTML Clinic. It's truly for the brand new "wanna do HTML" person.....

Yes, he has something to sell but you don't need it to learn what he has to offer, really!
