You've seen the basics on Build a Private Family Site..... now here are some of the details you should know.

GETTING STARTED:  When you set up your site you will be given three choices for publishing.
- Your site can be open to the world - anybody can see it, join by clicking on the "join" button, and immediately begin adding their input to messages, photos, etc.
- It can be semi-private - anybody can see it but when they sign up to join they become members after you approve them for membership.
- Choose complete privacy. The only way anybody can see your site is by invitation. You send an invitation to members of your choice with MSN tools. Your potential members actually become members by obtaining a Passport (like you did). When they respond to your invitation by going to the site from the URL provided in the invitation they will be given the opportunity to join. At this time, because they were invited, they become members. After they become members, they sign into MSN, click on "My Communities" and click on your site to get there.
- When you go to a private community's URL, you will be invited to sign in or get a Passport. Only approved e-mail addresses will be allowed to enter.

Want a Place to Share Your Photos?

Here are two places where granni currently has photos on the internet. Many of the same photos are shown both places. Check them out and see which one you like best. Each has it's advantages. First is the Hackert Lake Association album originally set up on Tripod. We then set up an album in MSN Communities.

The Tripod site has the "folksiness" of plenty of room for journaling about the event. As in any Tripod site, if you wish you can delete those pages you don't want to use, keeping only the "Home" page and photo page.... and you can add more photo pages. Keep in mind two things...
.....You always must keep the first page - it is the index page.
-----Too many photos on a page will slow down the page opening for visitors to your site. Also, resize the photos to 72 dpi or less before uploading them.

GET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR MANAGER TOOLS.
Add a page - Add a custom Web page, a calendar, a to-do list, a documents, and more.
Check Your E-mail Settings - Control how and when you receive e-mail. Change your e-mail address and visibility.
Manage Pages - Rename, reorder, hide, or even delete pages in your community. Make it the way you want it! NOTE: Do NOT delete the page entitled "Documents" as you will need it if you want to put backgrounds on your web pages.
Invite Others to Join - Send e-mail invitations to your friends, family, coworkers, teammates. Ask them to join.
Manage the Member List - See who has joined. Change a member's role. Accept or deny membership applications.
Send a Message to Your Community - Send a message to all the members. They can read it in their e-mail or on the message board.
Adjust Your Community Settings - Update the description, change policy settings and categories, even delete your community.
Send E-mail to Other Managers - Send a private e-mail to the other managers and assistant managers of this community.
View Your Member Profile - Change your nickname; add some details. See how much storage space you've used.
Send an Announcement to All Members - Send a message to the inboxes of all your members, regardless of their e-mail settings.
Manage Your Storage Space - See how much space you've used and delete any of your pictures, documents, or attachments to make room for more.

The MSN site example was originally a full-fledged website template. I deleted most of the pages & hid the ones I couldn't delete, thus making it strictly a "photo album". You can journal more than I did at this site. Keep in mind...
.....If you want to privatize your photo site, MSN does it easiest!
.....MSN resizes the photos for you!
.....With MSN you can keep the message board, calendar and numerous other interactive touches. It's much easier to have an interactive site with MSN at this point in time.
